Janet Marie

BAKER

Age 61, died peacefully in hospice on Friday, January 23, 2026. Her passing came after a decade-long battle with cancer. Despite her illness, Janet never despaired and continued to live life gracefully and on her own terms – as she always did. She immersed herself in new hobbies, cultivated meaningful friendships, and continued to be a loving and supportive mother and wife.

Janet was born in Halifax to the late Lawrence Deveau and Joan Deveau; sister to Rick (Jennifer) Deveau.

She enrolled in nursing school and graduated as a registered nurse, finding meaning in providing compassionate care in busy emergency departments before taking on management of the operating rooms of South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. She retired in 2019 following recurrence of her cancer.

Janet met Kevin Baker in her early 20s, and they married soon after. They had two children, Chelsea (Ian) and Mitchell Baker.

Outside of work and family, Janet was curious, patient, and creative. These traits were reflected in her hobbies: she pieced together many cherished scrapbooks, tended a lush garden, and later in life found the art of rug hooking – through which she produced many heartfelt and intricate rugs and was introduced to a community of dear friends. Janet spent many days in the loving company of her slightly goofy, but undeniably sweet, chocolate lab, Charley.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, with details to follow. Janet will be buried at Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater in the spring.

Donations in her memory are welcome and will be directed to the South Shore Hospice Palliative Care Society.

Arrangements entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater, where online condolences and messages may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
