BARKHOUSE

Barkhouse, (nee Myra) Sheila Anne, passed away peacefully at her home in Maitland on March 9th, 2025.   Born in New Ross, December 12th, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Noble Myra and the late Gladys (Russell) (Myra) Minnick and stepdaughter to the late Ronald Minnick.  


Sheila worked at the Chester Plastic Plant for many years and then started work with Bonny Lea Farm where she made great friends with many residents.  Sheila was well liked among the students.  Some of the residents continued to visit with her over the years.  She ended her working career as a Personal Care Worker (PCW) at Mahone Nursing Home and then later transferring to Hillside Pines before she retired.  


Sheila was a member of St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Martins Point, the same church where she was married.  She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star Grace Chapter No. 8 Lunenburg and later affiliated with Shoreham Chapter No. 59 of Chester.  


She enjoyed attending many events at the Blue Grass Festivals, enjoying both the music and camping with friends.  Selling 50/50 tickets with Vera and Bob at the Fox Mountain Campground was a favourite event.  She very much enjoyed meeting and talking with the people she met at the campgrounds and at many family outings that they attended.  Her laughter could be heard throughout the campgrounds.  


Sheila is survived by her husband of 63 years, Merrill Barkhouse; sister, Donna (Jefferson) Hebb of Ivy Meadows in Beaverbank; brother, William” Bill” (Donna) Myra of Western Shore; sister-in-law, Stella Myra of Western Shore, Mother-in-Law, Eva Barkhouse of Western Shore and many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her brother, Laurie Myra and sister, Nancy in infancy; brother-in-law, Robert Jefferson; brother-in-law, Fraser Hebb and Father-in-Law, Herbert Barkhouse.  


Special thanks to Schelene Swinemar NP, Dr Gibson, Victoria Order of Nurses, Home Care workers and especially Palliative Care Nurse Melanie and all who supported her during her illness.  


Also thank you to Rev. Dr. Patti Brace for her visits, prayers, and support at a time when it was needed most.  


A visitation was held Wednesday, March 12th, 2025, at Mahone Funeral Home, Mahone Bay.  A funeral service was held 11:00 am, Thursday, March 13th, 2025, at St James Anglican Church, Mahone Bay, The Rev. Dr. Patti Brace officiated.  Interment was in the Western Shore Cemetery.
