BENNETT

We have lost our Captain, our rudder, our hero.

Fredrick Keith Bennett passed on September 3, 2025, in Lunenburg, NS. Born in Petites, Newfoundland to the late Colin and Maggie (Mauger) Bennett, Fred moved to Lunenburg at the tender age of 16 to make a living on the sea.

During his 52-year career, Fred fished with Pierce Fisheries, Riverport Fisheries, Adams & Knickle, Scotia Trawlers and Clearwater. He had command of the vessels: Robert Joyce ll, Angela Michelle and Kay Angela. He was most proud of the Angela Michelle, a vessel named for his two daughters.
Fred had the opportunity to sail across the Atlantic on the JulieAnne lll, beginning in Norway, sailing to Scotland and then onward to Lunenburg. An experience of a lifetime.

Fred found his second career at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic where he made everlasting friendships. He had the opportunity to share his experiences and tricks of the trade, with a sense of deviltry and pride. He loved working at the museum, greeting visitors on the Theresa E. Connor and delivering his "Scallop Talk" to guests in the museum.

A true Maple Leafs and Blue Jays fan, he had hoped to see the Cup come back to Canada once more in his lifetime. Alas, Mitch Marner wasn’t able to do so.

Fred loved to follow politics. He was always up for a lively debate and held strong in his beliefs. Red was his favourite colour.

Fred loved a good game of cards; poker, 45s, crib and whist. But above all, family was the center of Fred’s world.

Helen was the love of his life, and that love never faltered. During dad’s long and courageous journey, mom never missed a day when she wasn’t by his side. A dedication like no other. Even at his lowest, dad always looked at mom with pure love in his eyes and a yearning to never leave her. They did everything together; they were a team.

The unconditional and never-ending love he had towards his children; Angela, David, and Michelle, is something we will always cherish, and we strive to bring forward with our own families. His grandchildren Jillian, Joshua, Maxwell, and Edwin were his shining stars, and he took such enjoyment and pleasure in being part of their lives. He was the best Poppy ever.
To know Fred was to love him. He was truly one of a kind.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Helen (Bailly), his daughter Angela and her children Jillian (Adrien) and Maxwell (Mandy), son David and his wife Jackie and son Joshua (Krystal) and daughter Michelle and her husband Jim and their son Edwin. His sisters Corella and Lillian (Alvin), several nieces, a nephew, grand nieces, and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his parents’ in-law Bertram and Juanita Bailly and brother’s in-law David Bailly and Fred Courtney.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy 3, Lunenburg. A service was held at 2pm on Friday, September 12, 2025, at Central United Church, Lunenburg. Rev. Daniel MacDonald officiating.
Donations may be made to Central United Church, Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital, or the Cancer Society.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Dr. Millen, Dr. Sampson, and the nursing staff of the medical unit at Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital, who took such great care of dad. Dad truly had a special place in his heart for all of you.
