Surrounded by family, Gary chose to leave his earthly home on September 20, 2025, aged 79, after a difficult battle with kidney disease and dialysis.
Born in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, QC in 1945 to parents Hubert and Rhea (Cook) Chamberlain, he is survived by his sisters Cindy (Sandy) Buchan, Halifax and Mitzi Chamberlain, Toronto; nieces Chrissy (Greg) Leonard and Cara Chamberlain; nephews, Timothy (Angie) Chamberlain, Ian (Haley) Buchan, and James (Greg) Buchan; great nephew Brandon; great nieces, Addison, Emma, Autumn, Ava, and Brielle and sister-in-law, Sharon.
He was predeceased by his parents and brother Gregory.
Educated at the one room school in First Peninsula, Centre Consolidated School, Nova Scotia Teachers College, and at Acadia University; Gary taught school at Bayport Elementary, Lunenburg Academy and Lunenburg Junior & Senior High School for 33 years and believed that education was a daily and lifelong adventure. Active in his community, he was a Charter Member of the Youth Alternative Society, a Past President of Lunenburg Tennis Club and volunteered with Scouts Canada, the Lunenburg Music Festival, the Local Food Bank, and the VON.
Gary served at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church as Sunday School teacher, church councillor, member of the choir, Assistant to the Pastor and sat on numerous committees. He danced in the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo and enjoyed Scottish Country and competitive Ballroom Dancing. Gary’s love of art brought him much joy in his beautiful watercolour painting; having had three successful art shows at Parkland Clayton Park where he resided.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service to celebrate Gary's life took place on Saturday, September 27 at 11am at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lunenburg, Pastor Victoria Featherston officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home in Lunenburg, with interment at Hillside Cemetery, family plot.
Memorial donations may be made to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church or to the Kidney Foundation.
