Fred “Horsey” Arthur Bennett

The family of Fred “Horsey” Arthur Bennett Dares, 88, of Bayport are sad to announce his passing on Monday, November 3, 2025 at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.


Born in Lunenburg, he was a son of the late Fred and Annie “Lowie” Cook Dares.


Horsey worked with National Sea Products, Lunenburg, for 40 years and was admired for his tremendous work ethic.


He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and active within his community where he was a member of the Lunenburg Fish and Game, founding member of Lunenburg Rod and Gun Club, the Nova Scotia Wildlife Federation and Nova Scotia Firearms Instructors. Horsey was also a former president of the Bayport Cemetery.


He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Eva (Corkum); son, Brian (Catherine); daughter, Nadine (Steven) Saunders; sister, Annette Hirtle; brother, Merrill (Linda); grandchildren, Adam, Jeffery, William, Ian, Ryan and several great grandchildren.


Besides his parents, Horsey was predeceased by brother, Glen Dares and sister, Sandra Allen.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy 3, Lunenburg.  A graveside service for family and close friends will be held on Sunday, November 16 at 1:00 pm at Bayport Cemetery.


In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Fred’s memory may be made to the Bayport Cemetery, Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg or to a charity of your choice.
