FALKENHAM
Peter Van
November 5, 2025

It is with deep sadness that the family of Peter Van Falkenham, 76, of Lunenburg, share the news of his passing on Wednesday November 5th, 2025, surrounded by family. Born in Lunenburg NS, he was the son of the late Marion and Elvin Falkenham.
Peter’s lifelong devotion to farming was evident in every acre he tended and every cow he raised. One of the first members of the Hill and Dale 4H Club, he developed a deep passion for livestock, earning many awards including a Grand Showmanship Award at the Bridgewater Exhibition. During the Cold War era, Peter’s reputation led to a notable recommendation that resulted in a meeting with Raúl Castro, former President of Cuba, who went on to purchase cattle from him. Known for his sharp instincts and strong eye for breeding genetics through artificial insemination, Peter’s discerning eye led to the breeding of Lilydale Rockman Mona, the most prestigious Holstein to emerge from Wayside Farm and the first cow in the Maritimes to produce over 32 litres of milk daily for 305 days. Peter not only built a successful career in dairy farming, but later made a seamless transition into beef production, managing a herd of over 120 head. His beef consistently commanded top dollar, a testament to his dedication to quality and careful breeding practices. It would not be uncommon for Peter to make more than 25,000 square bales of hay each season.
Peter loved landscaping and if he built you a rock wall you can guarantee it is still standing. When the season changed, he spent many long nights plowing countless homes and businesses throughout the town. Those long nights were made easier with a phone call to Kathie, when he would call to say, "I love you."
While Peter was known for his tremendous work ethic, he was equally known for his generosity and kindness. Many people will miss his homemade banana bread, baked beans, and hearty soups. He took great joy in giving his time and resources to seasonally decorate the Lutheran and Catholic Church.
Peter also found joy in family dinners at his beloved cottage, a place he was so proud of and where he and Kathie spent many summers gardening together. He loved mackerel fishing with his sons, gator rides with his children and grandchildren, and competitive family game nights. His true love, however, was his beloved wife of over 40 years, Kathie, whom he fondly remembers as "my honey" when telling stories about their shared adventures.
Peter is remembered by his children, Stacey (Laurianne), Nick (Erica), and Andrew; his grandchildren, Lena, Julia, Madeline, and Audrey; sisters Faye (Robert) and Vickie (Frank). He is predeceased by his late wife, Kathie Kirkpatrick.
