HANRAHAN

January 12, 1957 – December 15, 2025

With deep love and sorrow, we share that Joseph “Joe” Hanrahan of Lunenburg passed away at home on December 15, 2025, at the age of 68.

Born in Little Bay, Marystown, Nfld., he was the son of the late Philip & Mary Ann (Kelly) Hanrahan. He is survived by two sons, Jason (Julia), Dartmouth; Matthew (Stephanie), Beaver Bank; grandchildren Jordan, Jesse, Jade, Declan, Benjamin & Oakland; high school sweetheart and partner Daphne Falkenham & her children, Ali (Cody) and Mitchell; and brother, Tom (June) Hanrahan, Pleasantville. He was predeceased by his wife of 26 years and mother of his children, Paula (Parsons) Hanrahan, and sister Bridget in infancy.

Joe grew up with salt air in his lungs and the sea in his soul. His life was spent by the ocean, earning respect for his kindness, steadfastness, and dependability. His career included time aboard foreign vessels as a Fisheries Observer, where he delivered training and took pride in creating its official manual. In later years, Joe continued his commitment to the maritime world through his work with Fisheries and Aquaculture, always striving to support fishermen and freshwater hobbyists. His home, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, held a special place in his heart.

A man of simple pleasures and loyal friendships, Joe loved a good game of pool, a rum shared among friends, potatoes in all forms, and appreciating nature. He loved being a grandfather. He measured life in stories told at kitchen tables, in the camaraderie of game nights, and in gazing at constellations from the deck. He leaves behind extended family & many dear friends from harbours near and far.

The family will celebrate Joe’s life in the new year, where stories will be shared, and his favourite songs will be played. To honour Joe’s memory, please consider supporting a maritime or coastal charity close to your heart.

Until we meet again, Joe. We will miss you beyond words.
