HIRTLE

Age 89, of Bridgewater, Lunenburg Co., passed away Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Ridgewood Assisted Living, Bridgewater, where he had been residing. Born October 19, 1936, he was a son of the late Percy and Lillian (Wentzell) Hirtle, formerly of LaHave Island.

He is survived by his sister, Shirley; brother Frank (Judy); nieces, Trudy (Mike), and Felicia (Matt); great-nephews, Ashtin (Sarah), Colby (Brooke) and Landon; great-great-nephews, Marcus, Everette; great-great-niece, Melissa; and many cousins.

He was predeceased by sisters, Elizabeth, Hazel and one in infancy; brothers, Delbert, Lester, Reginald, St. Claire, Lawson, Everette, Nelson, and Eric; brother-in-law, Marcus.

He will always be remembered as a quiet and caring man. His selfless behaviour and generous nature touched the lives of everyone he met. His years as a fisherman allowed him a lifetime on the water, one of his favourite pastimes would always be to sit on the porch and watch the ocean, he could very often be found there, or his daily walks along Bell’s Island. He was always happy to spend some time with his many young nieces and nephews he always held a soft spot in his heart for them.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 7, 2026, in Sweeny's Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater. A private family interment will be held in Peaceful Hill Cemetery, West Dublin, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Leon’s memory may be made to LaHave and District Fire Department, the LaHave Islands Marine Museum, South Shore Regional Hospital, or a charity of choice.
