KIRKPATRICK

It is with deep sadness that the family of Kathie Jane Kirkpatrick, 74, of Lunenburg, shares the news of her peaceful passing on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family at her beloved cottage in Stonehurst, NS.

Born in Amherst, NS, she was the daughter of the late Les Kirkpatrick and Eva (Gavin) Kirkpatrick.

A lifelong learner and devoted educator, Kathie’s passion for teaching led her to a fulfilling career as an elementary school teacher in Halifax and Lunenburg County. She touched the lives of countless students and families. After retiring, Kathie shifted her focus to her community, taking on leadership roles such as running the local food bank, President of the Lunenburg Garden Association and Lunenburg Tennis Club, Meals on Wheels, her Catholic parish and the hospital gift shop. Kathie’s dedication to service reflected the depth of her compassion for others.

Kathie enjoyed traveling the world, from hitch hiking across Canada during her youth, to many adventures throughout Europe, Asia and Africa later in her life. She loved her time visiting Nick and Erica in Australia and incredible adventures in Italy with Andrew. No matter where she went, she could be found striking up a conversation with anyone. Despite seeing much of the world, her heart was always anchored in Parrsboro where she spent every summer with her close cousins, Candace, Jeff, Gavin, Scott, Martha and Patrick. She also loved her cottage in Stonehurst, where she and husband, Peter, turned a blank canvas into a gardening masterpiece and where she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. You could always find her admiring the view with a hot cup of tea.

A devoted mother, Kathie never missed her sons' sporting and school events and eagerly filled her minivan with whomever needed a ride. Nick and Andrew were her pride and joy. Whether she was cheering them on from the sidelines from every part of the province, helping with school projects, or simply offering a listening ear, her love was constant and unconditional. When she became a grandmother, her heart expanded even more. Lena, Julia, Madeline, Audrey and even Annie were beacons of joy for Kathie. She cherished every opportunity to create lasting memories with them, from playing games together to delighting in the simple joy of watching their imaginations run free.

Kathie is remembered by her husband of 40 years, Peter Falkenham; her children, Nick (Erica) and Andrew; her stepdaughter, Stacey (Laurianne); her grandchildren, Lena, Julia, Madeline and Audrey.

She is predeceased by her sister, Mary Kirkpatrick.

Though her absence leaves an unimaginable void, her spirit will continue to guide and inspire those who were blessed to know her.

Funeral arrangements are in the care of Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Highway 3, Lunenburg, with visitation being held from 7 to 9 p.m. on September 13. A funeral will be held at St. Norbert's Catholic Church on September 14, at 11 a.m., with Archbishop Martin Currie officiating. In honour of Kathie’s vibrant spirit, her family invites guests to wear bright-coloured attire, as she wished.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your local food bank or the Ovarian Cancer Society, causes very close to Kathie’s heart.
