Levaughn “Shirley” Romkey, 98, formerly of Blue Rocks, passed away in the loving presence of her family on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at Harbour View Haven Home for Special Care, Lunenburg.
Born in Blue Rocks on February 23, 1927, she was a daughter of Frederick and Olive (Tanner) Knickle.
Shirley loved her family and cherished so many wonderful times with them. She was a devoted friend and loved giving of her time and talents to her beloved community of Blue Rocks. Faithful in the church’s life, Shirley was a member of St. Barnabas Anglican Church, Blue Rocks and also attended St. Paul’s United Church, Blue Rocks with her husband, where she sang in the choir, was a member of the UCW, and was always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. She was passionate about her flower gardens and known by all who knew her for her delicious baked treats.
Shirley is survived by her sons, Geary, Lower LaHave, Jerome (Wendy), Blue Rocks, Jonathan (Anita), Corkum’s Island; grandchildren, Johnson, Lower LaHave, Stephanie (Steve), Hamilton, ON., Alicia (Rich), Wolfville, Adam (Jenn), Lunenburg, Samantha, Tantallon, and Claudia (Matthias), Kingston; seven great grandchildren; siblings, Julia Tanner, Blue Rocks and Ruth Mills, Lunenburg.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Captain Merrill Romkey; daughter-in-law, Valerie and brother, Frederick.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy #3, Lunenburg. Visitation was held on Monday, September 29 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm and a service to celebrate Shirley’s life, was held on Tuesday, September 30 at 2:00 pm from St. Paul’s United Church, Blue Rocks, Rev. Heather Ferrier officiating. Interment in Upper Blue Rocks Cemetery.
The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care given to Shirley while at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg and Harbour View Haven Home for Special Care, Lunenburg. Your kindness and compassionate care have been truly appreciated.
