SCANTLEBURY

October 15, 1935 – October 9, 2025

A loud life ends quietly. Age 89, Dr. Thomas Herbert Scantlebury succumbed to time at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Charlottetown, PEI.

He achieved so much in his allotted term, most consequentially he would always say was wedding Marion Harriet Nichol on March 4, 1957. She will now carry on without him along with their children Debra (Brian) MacLean, Stephen (Gloria), Scott (Pam MacPherson), Dawne (David) MacDougall and Shane (Cheryl). The pets who depended on him, Nugget and Tony will also have to do without his affection and attention. Also survived by sister-in-law Dawn and nieces and nephews. Tom was predeceased by his brothers George (June) and Roy, mother Rebe and dad Wally.

In his final days and weeks, he reveled in the memories of a long lifetime of adventure and eagerly shared them with whoever sat to talk.

Born in Charlottetown, he made significant stops at Acadia University in Wolfville, NS; Dalhousie Medical School in Halifax, and Bridgewater, NS where he opened his first medical practice. Desable, PEI where he endeavoured to become a country doctor and gentleman farmer. Aberdeen, Mississippi; Lewiston-Auburn, Maine; Wellington, Florida; Alexander, Maine, and finally Cornwall, PEI.

While his time was finite, Tom challenged any limits on the distance he would and did travel. For both pleasure and work, he visited and appreciated life in many parts of Canada and the United States. His adventures also took him to faraway places such as New Zealand, Pitcairn Island, and Europe.

He made acquaintances on his journey but if you were among those who he considered friends, you were in exclusive company. Those exceptionalities were incredibly diverse, among them were medical colleagues, professional wrestlers, golf partners, childhood pals, fellow travelers, and even descendants of Mutiny on the Bounty.

Tom’s children, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren are profoundly his lasting legacy. They are indebted to him for the full story of his life and for lessons of love, dignity, honour, and of living fully the life that God provides.

In his later years, Tom dabbled in art, painting proficiently, his canvases most often depicted images he photographed or remembered for his many adventures and experiences.

Though he was restrained by injury and infirmity, Tom fought for as much time as he could get with his beloved Marion. Until she joins him, Tom will wait patiently with family, friends, and the many pets he so adored who have gone before him.
