Richard Harry Walker was born on August 3, 1951, in Bridgewater, NS. He passed away peacefully on Friday, April 10, 2026 at the Veterans’ Unit of Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg.
Richard was the son of the late Harry and Leolyn (Lohnes) Walker.
He began his working career on board Columbia University’s research vessel, Vema, where he gained valuable sailing experience while travelling across the equator and circling the world. He then joined the crew of the Bluenose II, working as a Bosun and forging lifelong friendships. He spent most of his working career at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club in Toronto, ON. There, he captained the freight boat, Esperanza IV, providing the club with provisions. He especially enjoyed working with the Race Committee, which hosted a variety of provincial, national, and international regattas. Upon retirement, he returned to Centre, NS, where he enjoyed a quiet life of reading, gardening, listening to and watching the birds in their natural habitat, and reconnecting with dear friends.
Richard is survived by daughter, Kathryn (Kyle), Bowmanville, ON; son, Matthew (Shannon), Bowmanville, ON; June (Brendan), mother of Kate and Matt, Bowmanville, ON; sister, Susan, Dartmouth; brother, George (Janet), Riverport; grandchildren, Ayden, Liv, Nash, Kieran, Ryland, Brayden and Evelyn, Bowmanville, ON; and nephews Johnathan and George Jr, Riverport.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, Lunenburg. In lieu of a service, Richard’s last journey will be in keeping with his affection for life on the water, where his ashes will be scattered at sea with close family members.
