WATSON

With gratitude for a full life, well lived, the family of Dr Andrew Watson would like to share the news of his passing at the Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital on August 1, 2024, at the age of 90.

Andrew was born in Plymouth, UK, in May of 1934 to Francis and Ernest Watson and older brother Stephen (Anne). Andrew was schooled in Crediton and became a St Paul’s Choir Boy between rugby matches and endless cello practice. Andrew attended St Barts medical school where he married Jenifer. Emigrating to Canada in 1968 with sons Philip (Dr Krista) and David (Lissen BScN/RN). Andrew took up a family practice in Mahone Bay and anaesthesia duties at the Fisherman’s. He was forever grateful to his patients, coworkers and the staff in his clinic. After years of practice Andrew changed paths and joined the administration at MMC/MSI. For close to twenty-five years Andrew was a medical director and consultant for Nova Scotia, PEI, Northwest Territories and New Brunswick.

In his later years Andrew rekindled his love of woodworking and teaching. He spent his days in his workshop crafting pens, bowls and lamps and in general, “making sawdust”. He always enjoyed visitors and students in the shop and took great pride in sharing his knowledge with likeminded artisans. In the end, Andrew was content with his life and the knowledge the race had been run. Finally at peace and free of pain Andrew slipped away quietly.

The family would like to say thank you to the teams of healthcare professionals that spent time keeping Andrew going over the years, particularly the Dept of Orthopedics. At the end, the staff at the Art Patterson Rehab Center and the Medical Ward in the Fisherman’s provided kind and gentle care. Andrew’s commitment to lifelong learning is reflected by the donation of his remains to The Dalhousie Department of Anatomy for research and the benefit of medical students. A last gift to those who helped him so much.
