WENTZELL (Dorey)
Jennie Elsie
May 3, 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Jennie Elsie Wentzell (Dorey), on May 3, 2026, at Hillside Pines Home for Special Care. Jennie shared 74 wonderful years of marriage with her devoted husband, Percy. Together, they built a life centered on love, hard work, and family, raising six children: Percy (Billy) (Nancy), Christopher (Chris) (Linda, deceased), Brian (Christine), Robert (Bobby) (Jane), Todd (Lorna), and Bonnie (Donald). Jennie was a remarkable woman whose work ethic and determination were evident in the businesses she and Percy built together. From operating a trucking company—where she proudly held her Class 1 license — to running a construction business that included garbage contracts, building moving, and an enviro depot, she was always fully involved. Many will fondly remember her at PJ’s Bargain Centre, her special place where she could be found sorting clothes, cutting rags, preparing for basement sales, or spending evenings at the laundromat. Her life revolved around family—the most important thing to her. Jennie’s kitchen was always open, the hub of family activities, and no one ever left hungry. She was often found stirring something delicious in her well-used Dutch oven with her oversized metal spoon or baking fresh bread from scratch — two of her many trademarks in the kitchen. The cookie can was always full, with tasty treats awaiting anyone who stopped by. Jennie cherished time at the camp, where weekends were filled surrounded by friends and family. The camp brought many memories of laughter, family gatherings, horseshoes, swimming, lively card games and long walks exploring nature with her grandchildren. She and Percy also shared a love of travel, spending winters in Florida where they formed lasting friendships and memories, and exploring much of Canada and the United States together. Jennie had a deep love for the outdoors — no matter the season, she could be found outside enjoying nature. Winter was a favorite, filled with snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, skating, and even snow shoveling. In the warmer months, Jennie enjoyed biking, gardening, mowing, or simply basking in the sunshine. She was often outside from sunrise to sunset, making the most of every moment the day had to offer. Jennie is survived by her brother, Frankie (Carolyn) Dorey, as well as her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Andrew Eldridge Dorey and Elsie Matilda Dorey (MacLean); her brothers, Andrew, Gerald, Frederick, and Herbert; and her sisters, Marjorie, Dorothy, and Joan. Jennie will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her. Her legacy of love, strength, and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Memorial donations are requested to be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Mahone Funeral Home, P.O. Box 200, 32 Parish St., Mahone Bay, NS B0J 2E0 (902-624-8241). Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.mahonefuneral.ca
