BIRD NOTES

Lise Bell has the final tally for the Broad Cove Christmas Bird Count, which occurred on Dec. 28 – a total of 65 birds were seen on the count day.

I had to move the date for the White Point Christmas Bird Count from Dec. 20 to the 21 due to predicted high winds. It turned out that the winds were very high on the day of the count ranging from 29 to 59 kms mostly from the southwest. Temperatures were between four and nine celsius.

David Walmark and I went out birding on Dec. 17 for a couple of hours.

The Barrington Christmas Bird Count was held on Dec. 14 this year.

On Dec. 1 Joe Holmes of Bridgewater had a Baltimore oriole show up at his feeders.

Wilma Clancy found a prairie warbler Nov. 21 at Sperry Beach in Petite Riviere.

Well, this week I planned to write on the red-bellied woodpecker as one continued at the residence of Barbara McLean in Lunenburg and I had one show up at my place in LaHave.

Some weeks I struggle for a topic bird to write about. This week I could write on four or five species.

I had originally intended to write on the blue-gray gnatcatcher this time around, but hopefully that will be my focus bird in next weeks column.

On Nov. 1, I received a phone call from Kevin Lantz saying that he had found a ruddy duck at Kingsburg Pond.

Rare geese show up every year in the Truro area in October.

Most of what I'll be writing about occurred between Oct. 14-22. Locally, it again was a quiet period overall.
